How to Make Vegan BBQ Chicken
For the Seitan Chicken:
To prepare the seitan dough, start by combining the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl: wheat gluten, chickpea flour, chicken seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. Mix everything thoroughly to distribute the spices evenly throughout the mixture.
Gradually pour in the wet ingredients—water, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and salt—while stirring to bring the mixture together.
Once the ingredients are combined, use your hands to knead the mixture gently for about two minutes until it forms a firm dough with a stretchy texture. If the dough feels too soft or sticky, sprinkle in a little more wheat gluten and knead until it reaches the desired consistency.
Tear off small portions of the dough and roll them into balls using your palms. Aim for even-sized portions for consistent cooking.
After shaping the dough into balls, press each one lightly to form thick, slab-like pieces, which will serve as the “seitan chicken.”
Brush each slab generously with the prepared BBQ sauce, coating both sides thoroughly.
Place the pieces on the grill and cook until they develop a golden-brown color and slight char marks, flipping halfway through. This should take about 3–5 minutes per side.
Once the seitan is fully grilled, remove it from the heat and brush on another layer of BBQ sauce for extra flavor and a glossy finish.
Allow the seitan to rest for about an hour before serving to let the flavors settle and the texture firm up.
Enjoy your flavorful and satisfying BBQ seitan chicken!
Vegan BBQ Seitan Chicken Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup wheat gluten
- 2 tbsp chickpea flour
- ½ tbsp vegan chicken seasoning
- ½ tbsp garlic powder
- ½ tbsp onion powder
- ½ tsp chili powder
- ½ cup water
- ½ tbsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
- salt to taste
- pepper to taste
- ½ cup BBQ sauce
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine wheat gluten, chickpea flour, chicken seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. Mix them together thoroughly.
- Add the water, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and salt. Knead gently for two minutes until it turns into dough. If the dough is too soft then add a little more wheat gluten to the dough.
- Take small portions of the dough, place them in your palm, and gently roll them into small balls.
- Shape as many balls as you can from the dough, ensuring they are evenly sized—not too large or too small. Once shaped, press each ball gently to flatten it into a thick slab.
- Steam the seitan slabs using your preferred method. You can use a steaming pot, a steaming basket, or even steam them in the oven. Choose the method that is most convenient for you and ensure the seitan is fully steamed.
- Once the seitan is steamed, carefully take it out and prepare for grilling. Use a traditional outdoor grill, a BBQ grill, or a grill pan—whatever you have on hand and find convenient. Preheat the grill to get it ready for cooking.
- Coat the steamed seitan chicken generously with BBQ sauce, ensuring each piece is well-covered. Place them on the preheated grill and cook until they develop a beautiful golden color with slight char marks.
- Once done, remove them from the grill and brush on another layer of BBQ sauce for extra flavor. Let the seitan rest for an hour before serving to allow the flavors to settle. Enjoy!
